eThekwini Games plays host to talented and passionate athletes

DISTRICT Six were crowned the champions at the eThekwini Games, held at the Olive Convention Centre recently.

Over 4 000 athletes from all wards of eThekwini Municipality gathered at various sports facilities to participate in the municipality’s 16 priority sports codes — soccer, rugby, tennis, chess, boxing, karate, basketball, volleyball, indigenous games, athletes, dance, table tennis, swimming, golf, cricket and netball. Teams coming from District One areas, including Tongaat and Verulam, participated in the games.

Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit Thembinkosi Ngcobo thanked all the participants for representing their teams with zeal and determination.

“I am very impressed with the amount of passion and talent displayed at the games. I have no doubt that, with hard-work and determination, we will produce future world-class sports stars who will fly the Durban flag high at international events,” said Ngcobo.

First position went to the three wards, namely 76, 78 and 90, for District Six. The teams received five gold medals and six silver medals.

In the second position was district nine [wards 12 - 24 and 92]. They received three gold, four silver and one bronze.

District three [wards 11, 34 - 47, 104 and 107] secured third position, walking away with two gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

Athletes identified during the games will be selected to represent team eThekwini at the KZN DSR Salga games, scheduled to take place in Pietermaritzburg in December 2018.
