Local club gives back to the community
GIVING back to the community and empowering needy people are the main instrumental tools to root out social ills in the community.
This was the message that was spread at a Mandela month initiative held in Hambanathi for the elderly people on Monday, July 30.
More than 10 senior citizens from Hambanathi Township received groceries and blankets from the Uthongathi Football Club. The function was part of the Mandela month initiative to commemorate his centenary.
The team, together with Elesiphiwo Community Crisis Centre, a local organisation in Hambanathi, identified senior citizens in the area aged from 80 to 100 years old who are in need.
Communications manager for Uthongathi FC Nkosinathi Chili said the team intends to plough back to the community and educate local youth about the importance of education.
“This function is intertwined. On one hand we celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela and yet we give back to the community. We want the community to know our players as they need prayers ahead of the new season,” Chili said.
He added that the team nurtures the talents of young people and assists the youth in sharpening existing talents.
“We want to increase our visibility in the community and ensure that the residents are familiar with the team. Some of the players are coming from Hambanathi,” Chili said.
He added that the club will partner with social organisations to empower the youth through outreach programmes.
