A celebration of African food

AS part of nation-building, La-Teranga Bed and Breakfast in Kokstad hosted guests from different parts of Africa in Kokstad last Saturday.

Guests wore traditional attire and were given African food and beverages prepared by chefs. Attendees came from a range of countries like Ghana, Swaziland, Ethiopia, Congo, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt and South Africa.

B&B owner Siphokazi Thiam said the event was meant to bring people from different cultures and traditions under one roof and to end the dislike of foreigners. She called for other towns around Kokstad to do the same.

“Kokstad has diverse cultures, so I wanted people to celebrate their cultures by eating nice food together,” she said. Thiam hopes to host the event annually on the first weekend of September.

Shayamoya Secondary School tourism teacher, Loyiso Bavuma, said people must promote their cultures to encourage investors.

Guests were treated to Nigerian food like Jollof Rice, red sauce, carrot pancakes and fried plantain; Senegalese food such as Chicken Yassa, Mafé and soup; and Ghanaian Fufu.

Other dishes on offer included foodstuff like Bariis Maraq, Bobotie, Mogodu, Okre, Mopane Worms and Tihove.
