Burglaries plague local community

KOKSTAD SAPS are on the search for suspects in relation to a number of cases of burglaries and theft of car tyres that were reported recently.

On August 31, a case of burglary was reported after items costing R18 000 were stolen from a house in Shayamoya. The home owner was not at the residence when the crime was committed.

In another incident, a 24-year-old woman from Bhongweni locked up her house and left the residence to study, returning home later that night. Upon waking the following morning, she found that her cosmetics and other items, costing approximately R10 000, had been stolen.

“Bags and cellphones were reportedly missing when the house owner was sleeping in Bongweni on Saturday,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo.

He said police are investigating more than 10 cases of burglary at residential places, adding that most burglaries were committed at night or during the day when house owners were at work. He asked people to establish street patrols and strengthen neighbourhood watch.

He also warned people to maintain security in their cars to avoid the theft of vehicles and tyres.

“Four tyres were stolen from separate yards in Bongweni on Saturday night,” he said. He added that a 41-year-old man has reported a case of stolen laptops, costing R20 000, that were taken from his car in Hope Street.

“No one has been arrested for the crimes and police are asking the public to come forward with any information,” said Ncongo.
