EFF monitoring council process

MEMBERS of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from Matatiele have vowed to monitor council meetings to make sure there is clean governance at local government level.

Members wore the party’s regalia and formed part of the Matatiele Municipal council sitting as their first initiative on Monday this week.

The party’s Alfred Nzo regional secretary, Simthembile Madikizela, who was with EFF members in Matatiele, said the party has decided to visit local municipalities to observe how council meetings are being conducted. He said the society is allowed to attend council sittings, however their initiative is part of making sure there is clean governance and they want local government to put people first. The party has accused other municipalities of refusing councillors from wearing their party’s regalia.

“We are concerned about the effectiveness of these councils, as in our view and observations they are contravening certain laws that govern the smooth running of councils. Councillors must be given enough time to read council documents,” said Madikizela. He also condemned the demolition of illegal structures at Harry Gwala Park Township in Matatiele last month.

Madikizela commended the Matatiele local municipality for giving recognition to councillors and allowing EFF councillors to wear party regalia during council sittings.

The Matatiele local municipality was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
