Football stars rewarded

VICTORY and good performance of Bhubesi FC players was celebrated at the awards event of football stars in Kokstad last Saturday.

Football players who have performed well during the South African Breweries (SAB) Harry Gwala South African Football Association (SAFA) league were thanked and they received certificates.

Players who shined during the league include Mihle Mbewu who received the Player of the Season award. Another player, Sipho Shozi was awarded for best player and Siphamandla Cele as top goal scorer after he scored eight goals during the league games.

The chairman’s award was given to Lithalethu Ngwanya while Best Newcomer award was given to Mfundo Phungula. The club’s manager Zama Ngubo said the team has improved performance in the past four years.

“The team started playing in the Kokstad Local Football Association league for three years and was promoted to play in the SAB League games last year. Team players played extremely well in the SAB league as a result we secured second place with 34 points,” said Ngubo.

Speaking at the event, Ward 8 Councillor Lwanda Madikizela encouraged footballers to play sport with a passion. He said sport facilities are required in schools for pupils to play sport at an early age. He said Kokstad is in need of the sports academy to nourish talented players.

The guest speaker was Daliwonga Qhwalela who also emphasised a need for a sports academy for the benefit of young people.

“Footballers need to be punctual and responsible when playing sport,” he said adding that talented footballers have to be identified during foundation phase. He called for the municipalities and Department of Sport and Recreation to contribute in sports development and sponsor clubs.

“In Kokstad, we need qualified coaches for the development of sport. Playing sport is another way of fighting drug abuse, diseases, crime and building discipline to young people,” he said.
