LAUNCH OF COMMUNITY SAFETY IN GKM
MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, launched the GKM community safety structures on Tuesday at the Bhongweni Youth Centre. The safety structures were launched with the purpose of building working relations between government and members of the community in the fight against crime.
During the launch, community members were given the platform to talk to the MEC with regards to safety and crime issues within Kokstad communities. Among other issues were the drug-dealing and drug abuse problem in Kokstad, the slow pace in dealing with drug cases by members of SAPS, murder and other forms of crime. A lack of trust of the SAPS by community members was also among the issues discussed during the launch.
Members of the community must be able to produce proof of any action which shows the lack of interest in serving the community by members of the SAPS, so that the department can be in a position to deal with individual members who are not doing their jobs well. This was said by the MEC in response to the allegations made by community members. He further made a plea to community members that crime prevention is everybody’s responsibility.

TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES AND TRADITIONAL LEADERS WORKSHOP (GKM CASE STUDY)
The Greater Kokstad Municipality is organising a workshop which will serve as a platform to conduct a case study on traditional communities and traditional leader’s recognition in Kokstad.
The municipality has invited the National House of Traditional leaders together with the Provincial House of Traditional Affairs, Office of the Premier in KZN. All affected and interested stakeholders in and around Kokstad are invited.
The workshop emanates from the challenge faced by the municipality where there are a number of traditional leaders who are not recognised by the premier of KZN. The municipality cannot recognise any traditional leader without a proof of recognition from the Premier’s Office. It also must be remembered that Kokstad does not currently have recognised traditional leaders.
The municipality does not have the authority to recognise traditional leaders but can work with them as stakeholders after they have been recognised by the premier. The workshop will unpack the prescripts of the law with regard to this matter and explain the processes and procedures, including the handling of the disputes in such matters.

BATTLE OF THE ARTISTS
This serves as a reminder to local artists that the municipality is in the process of establishing a database for artists residing in Kokstad in all music genres. All artists or groups are encouraged to register for participation at the municipal offices at Adam Kok III Building, 75 Hope Street in Kokstad.
