Igniting girl power in football

YOUNG girls need to be nurtured in sport from a young age, said local football coach Lindokuhle Nxadi when speaking to the Fever about training young girls in football. He started training young female footballers in 2015 and his players have never disappointed him.

Seven female football players from Nxadi’s club, Diski Pros Football Development Club, were recently selected for the Harry Gwala District squad that will play in the South African Local Government Authority (Salga) games in Pietermaritzburg from December 6 to December 10.

“I am training young girls aged from nine years to 17 years. This is the prime age for them to learn the sport of football,” he said.

Nxadi conducts training after school hours and at weekends. His team consists of over 50 young girls from Kokstad. On November 12, his team will be playing a match in Underberg.

Other local teams that will participate in the Salga games have also started preparing. Jean Nyembezi, the Greater Kokstad Municipality’s sport officer, said local rugby, cricket, chess, netball, football and dance clubs will all be participating in the Salga games.
