QUEEN’S MERCY COMMUNITY GET CLEAN RUNNING WATER

On their mission to provide every Alfred Nzo district citizen with clean running water, Alfred Nzo District Municipality has installed water taps at Gudlintaba in ward 9.This was witnessed on August 3.

Alfred Nzo District Municipality, together with Matatiele Local Municipality, embarked on a mayoral/EXCO outreach last week, in Matatiele. Mr Samuel Moshoeshoe, traditional leader, appreciated the project, saying: “It is more difficult during the winter season because most springs and fountains dry up. Today, we all have reasons to welcome this project with both hands from government and, as community members, we promise to take care of it as it will make our lives easier” he concluded.

Alfred Nzo District Municipality Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Infrastructure Services Cllr Polelo Mohale led the team and, joined by EXCO Member Cllr. Sicelo Maphasa, introduced a contractor appointed to install a borehole for the community of Queen’s Mercy in ward 12. The borehole will provide water to more than 100 households.

MASISIZANE FLAGSHIP HARVEST DAY

The Masisizane fund is a division of the Old Mutual group and flagship funding institution that seeks to develop the economy through funding SMMEs in different economic sectors.

The organisation saw big potential for agriculture in the Eastern Cape, and specifically the Matatiele/Maluti region, and has since then been in partnerships with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, Matatiele Local Municipality and the department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, together with farming SMMEs, investing R100 million since the year 2014.

On July 31, the MEC of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Mr. Xolile Nqatha visited Matatiele Famers for a harvesting event and to see the progress that has been made thus far in the area.

The day’s activities started off with a harvesting at one of the maize producing farms in the area.

The MEC was very impressed to see the top of the range plant and equipment that the farmers were using in harvesting and processing their maize.

The investment by Masisizane in this region has yielded positive gains as sighted by the organizations CEO Mrs Nyanga. Since the starting of the partnership of Masisizane and Grainco, (which is an organisation which was formed by the farmers), production of maize and beans in these farms has increased considerably. She also said, through good partnerships with various stakeholders, they have also managed to make profits by creating value chains within the area, and by centralising the markets.

SAICA’s enterprise development CEO, Annie McWalter, shared how the partnership began with Masisizane and also explained their role in graduate development by the organisation, hiring young graduates from the district and making them facilitate the accounting of books and other administrative functions at the farms in partnership with Masisizane.

Speaking at the gathering, one of SAICA’s students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity afforded to them by SAICA. The event was then proceeded by awards and a prizegiving session where the most performing and emerging farmers were recognised.

We wish them all the best – let the sky be the limit for them!
