MATAT VIEWPOINT

A WARM Women’s Month greeting to you.

Following a four-day community protest that led to a total shut down in Matatiele, the MEC of Roads and Transport met with Matatiele stakeholders early this week, on August 21, in Matatiele.

Joined by the Matatiele LM Mayor, Cllr Mbedla and his leadership, the MEC acknowledged the backlog that exists in the Alfred Nzo district but promised to focus on practical interventions to resolve some of the grievances affecting Matatiele area in particular.

The collective agreed to form a steering committee that will preside over the challenges of roads in Matatiele. The committee will comprise of all relevant stakeholders, including ward councillors. It is after these engagements that the public transport operators in Matatiele, led by the R56 Matatiele Forum, resolved to suspend the protest action.

“The province is aware of the backlog regarding surfacing of roads and it is more than the magnitude and resources available”.

The MEC further alluded to the fact that the province will embark on massive road maintenance plan — to reduce public complaints. The municipality would like to extend a word of gratitude to Matatiele and Maluti SAPS for maintaining peace and order during these protests. To the business sector, schools and all those who were negatively affected, please accept our sincere apology.
