Matatiele Local Municipality viewpoint

WARM greeting to all readers of this viewpoint and welcome once again to our weekly update column.

Candlelight memorial

Matatiele Local Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Health and stakeholders, under the auspices of the local Aids council, will on May 25 commemorate the International Aids Candlelight memorial. The idea behind the initiative is to honour those who have been affected and infected by Aids and at the same time raise awareness among youth about HIV and Aids.

Started in 1983, the International Aids Candlelight Memorial is led by some 1 200 community organisations in 115 countries, including South Africa. It is annually celebrated on the third Sunday of May.

The International Aids Candlelight Memorial is much more than just a memorial, it serves as a community mobilisation campaign to raise social consciousness and mitigate stigmatisation around HIV and Aids.

With many people living with HIV, the memorial serves as an important intervention for solidarity, breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination, and giving hope to the new generations.

This year’s memorial will be held under the theme “Ending Aids together”. This event will be held at Mahlake in Ward 24.

On this day, issues of ignorance and the lack of HIV related knowledge that exist in our communities will be addressed.
Diverse groups of community leaders, including community health workers, researchers, business people, faith and organisation leaders and concerned individuals will take part in this HIV awareness and stigma eradication.

State of the Matatiele Local Municipality Address

In commemoration of the Africa Month, the Mayor of Matatiele Local Municipality Cllr Momelezi Mbedla, will table the State of the Municipality Address (Soma) at Khauoe Community Hall in Ward 25 on May 29. This, as part of the 2017 Open Council sitting, is to adopt the budget and IDP.

The 2017 Soma will be delivered under the theme “The year of OR Tambo: Building a better Africa and a etter world”.

The mayor will reflect on the past nine months of his administration after the 2016 local government elections. His address will include the achievements recorded in the 2016/2017 financial year.
Municipal plans for the next five years, will also be outlined.
The focus if the mayor’s administration is to accelerate service delivery, improve the economy of the municipality with special focus on agriculture, youth development and the position the municipality as both an investor and tourist destination.

Youth forums to be established

The municipality through its Special Programmes Unit will embark on a campaign to establish youth forums in all 26 wards of Matatiele.
The rationale behind forming these structures is to play an advocacy role in matters relating to young people, assist in the development of youth programmes and lobby funds for youth programmes, to mention a few.

From Monday May 22 until Friday May 26, the municipality will visit the following wards to establish ward youth forums - Ward 11, 25, 12, 13, 15, 16, 14, 18 & 22 respectively.
For times, venues and dates, consult your ward councillor, CDW, ward clerk, ward committees and or visit MLM offices.
