Municipality turns dumping sites green

GREATER Kokstad Municipality (GKM) has initiated a new strategy of planting trees in order to curb illegal dumping in the town and townships.

On Tuesday afternoon, several trees were planted in the Twistville area, at Kokstad Primary School and next to the Umkhomazi River to mark Arbor week and to promote the illegal dumping movement. The municipality wants to target places where people often dump their waste and turn them green by planting trees.

Greater Kokstad deputy mayor Karen Walker said planting trees would benefit people in the community.

“The municipality has identified places for planting trees to protect the environment and to keep the town green.

“Families have been identified that would benefit from vegetable seeds and trees that will be part of this green environment,” she said.

She also encouraged people to protect the trees and to stop dumping waste illegally.

Greater Kokstad Municipal waste and environmental assistant manager Fani Nyembezi said illegal dumping is a major concern in Kokstad but, by planting trees, the face of the town would definitely look much more beautiful.

“We plant trees for everyone to see the beauty of Kokstad and our townships,” he said.

People of Twistville thanked the municipality for promoting a greener environment.
