People warned about veld fires

COMMUNITIES have been warned to remain vigilant and not to start unnecessary fires during the fire season.

In KwaZulu-Natal, 732 trained firefighters from 32 areas have been dispatched during the fire season.

Firefighters were given eight buses, five trucks, 10 fire trucks, nine strike units and 10 bakkies to respond to fire dangers. From Monday, firefighters have been deployed to several areas with extremely high runaway fire warnings in the province.

Between July 30 and August 5, 151 firefighters responded to 15 fires.

Areas that were affected include Kokstad, Vryheid, Royal Natal, Hluhluwe, Winterton, Eshowe, Umzimkhulu, eDumbe and Mbazwana.
