Promoting local attractions this Tourism Month

THE Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality, under the tourism unit, is calling on all residents to promote tourism to help improve the local economy.

We are in a tight economic environment; tourism is one of the sectors we believe can pull us out of this place.

It is about general patriotism and hospitality, how we treat guests coming to our shores the more hospitable we are, the better it is for our economy.

By travelling the country, each of us can leave a financial footprint where we visit — that is how we leave money in these places which results in the multiple effect of the economy.

The theme for Tourism Month this year is “Tourism and the Digital Transformation”, which is aimed at promoting employment and community development while having a low impact on the environment.

Tourism Month aims to encourage South Africans to travel domestically to get a better understanding of the affordable, exciting and world class attractions that are available on their own doorstep. We would like to encourage inter-district touring within the province using tourism as the vehicle to achieve that objective.

As the Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality, strongly supported by the Harry Gwala Development Agency as well as the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Arts and Culture, we want to make sure that tourism is a sustainable driver of economic growth in our municipal area.

We are calling on South Africans to ensure that the country is receptive and that everyone understands the value of making tourism profitable. Tourism is about loving who you are and installing the dignity of the people. We want Tourism Month to make us commit to supporting businesses, this is what the annual Duzi 2 Sani 4X4 Expedition and Inter-Cultural Food Tasting Expo is about in our district.

Our people view tourism as a visit to the cities or places near the sea but the aim of the Duzi 2 Sani event is to show our people that even inland places are a perfect holiday destination or touring place as not enough locals are exploring holiday destinations in South Africa.

The Duzi 2 Sani Southern Drakensberg Weekend Experience aims to held South Africans find a new appreciation for their country while making an economic contribution that literally changes and uplifts the lives of the entire communities; this event provides a platform to local entrepreneurs within the tourism sector to showcase their businesses.

In 2018, the inter-cultural food tasting will be promoting a family day as we will be having activities that accommodates children.

This year has seen the growth of the Duzi 2 Sani event with the Umngeni Municipality as the new partner. The event will commence on September 14 at Msunduzi in Pietermaritzburg, September 15 will be the Southern Drakensberg Experience at Underberg and September 16 will be a tour to Lesotho.

The Southern Drakensberg tour operators association is offering a Duzi 2 Sani, Sani Pass day tour special to Lesotho at R650 per person on a Sunday in an expedition that will be led by Land Rover. Those who own 4x4s are welcome to join the expedition (booking through the tourism office).

This year the food expo aims to take a different shape with regards to activities with additional activities on the day such as archery, horse and pony rides

As the Dr. NDZ Municipality, we are calling upon all entrepreneurs who want to showcase during the food tasting expo —from wors rolls, chicken dust, fruits , refreshments, clothing lines, crafts, curios, jams and preserves, visual art, even to promote their businesses e.g. Shisanyamas, beauty and therapy, B&Bs, mobiles, processed meat, cheese and wine tasting etc. to please kindly contact the tourism office at Underberg for stalls registration on 033 701 1471.

In the evening we will be hosting a befitting Jazz session to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Duzi 2 Sani.
