KOKSTAD Public Primary School pupils promoted environmental health by cleaning the Umzintlava River and school premises as part of their celebration of Mandela Day.
School principal Siphesihle Mkhize said the Department of Environmental Affairs and Department of Correctional Services employees assisted with the clean-up.
“Pupils are taught about maintaining a clean environment on a daily basis. We involve pupils in cleaning campaigns to keep the school clean and healthy,” said Mkhize.
He said government departments and municipalities often assist during cleaning campaigns.
“In 2011, we initiated a cleaning campaign and the school has won awards for being the cleanest school in Kokstad,” said Mkhize.
Pupils, community members, and municipality workers joined thousands of South Africans across the nation in participating in community outreach programmes held in honour of global icon Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday.
