ON Wednesday, acting provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi commended police and security agencies who worked hard to arrest six men linked to murder cases in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
SAPS from Creighton and Ixopo arrested a 30-year-old man for murder and robbery on Tuesday. He will appear in court soon.
The man was found with a firearm and six rounds of ammunition as well as property stolen from the victim’s house, including their cellphones.
The arrest follows an incident which occurred on September 8 at 3 am when a couple at Lyn Avis Farm in Creighton were accosted by three armed men.
“The men allegedly tied up the wife and fatally shot a 66-year-old man.
“The men also stole laptops, cellphones, as well as other items from the house before fleeing the scene.
“The deceased was identified as Peter Scott (66),” said SAPS spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker. He said a case of robbery and murder was opened at Creighton SAPS and police are still searching for the remaining men.
Naicker said the firearm that was seized had its serial number filed off however it will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if it was used during the robbery and murder.
In a separate case, detectives from Verulam and crime intelligence officers conducted an intelligence-driven operation to track down suspects who were involved in a robbery and murder case. The team searched various areas, including Inanda, Ndwedwe and Cottonlands, while tracing the suspects.
“A total of five men aged between 18 and 30 were arrested by police officers and stolen property including cellphones and a motor vehicle, as well as various household items, were seized from the arrested men,” said Naicker.
On September 3, the bodies of Dhir Singh (68) and Kay Singh (63) were discovered in their house in Cottonlands in Verulam and charges of robbery and murder were being investigated by Verulam SAPS.
“I want to commend all those who were involved in the investigation as well as those who were responsible for the apprehension of these criminals.
“The police will not rest when people are being killed in their own homes by greedy criminals,” said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
The five men who were arrested will be appearing to Verulam Magistrate’s Court today, September 14.
