Student Representative Council condemns student protest

STUDENT protests at the Esayidi Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College has entered the third week, and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has distanced itself from protesting students. Chairperson of the SRC, Masimbonge Mkhatshane, said protesting students have never consulted the SCR when organising the protest. He said two weeks ago, a meeting was held between protesting students and the SRC and some complaints were deliberated.

“The protest was not authorised by the SRC and protesting students are being influenced by political parties. When students complained about lack of computer labs and shortage of lectures, [we] were informed by the school management that there is no such,” said Mkhatshane.

He condemned the protest saying a lot has been disrupted. “On July 31 and August 1, new SCR members were supposed to be introduced to the school but because of the protest [it] was delayed. Classes have also been disrupted,” he said.

Students complained about irregular distribution of schedule of particulars forms for 2016, 2017 and 2018, pending results, and decline of applications for N4 students, shortage of lectures, shortage of infrastructure and resources and lack of computer labs. They said N5 students experience difficulties of being tutored by one lecturer in three subjects and that this causes misplacement of results. Mkhatshane said SRC will engage protesting students to allow the institution to operate well. A security room was torched by protesting students on Monday afternoon and police were seen moving around the campus.
