Tensions flare as community calls for council action

COMMUNITY members of Tsolobeng village from Ward 10 in Mount Fletcher burned tyres in protest against their ward councillor, Moleboheng Telile, on Monday.

They handed over their petition to the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) officials, accusing Telile of not attending community meetings.

Community members established a Development and Complaints Committee to drive service delivery in the area. The committee’s leader, Bonang Tsoho, said the area has no water, roads and electricity.

“When we call our ward councillor to discuss service delivery matters, she always makes excuses or promises to attend meetings but fails.

“After trying several times to engage with her, we have decided to put our complaints to the office of Cogta,” he said.

In response, Telile has denied claims made against her, saying people who organised the march were pushing their political agendas.

“The relationship between the community and myself was absolutely fine in 2016, but things changed after my ANC branch chose me to attend the Eastern Cape Provincial Congress last year. People who were supporting Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma for presidency did not want me to attend the provincial congress because I was supporting Cyril Ramaphosa,” she said.

She said she had called many meetings with the people of the community, but a certain group of people did not attend the meetings.

“I feel unsafe because a tyre was burnt in front of my house and I received lots of threats for supporting Ramaphosa,” she said.

She said the majority of people in the area have showed support in attending her meetings, even though there were some who never attended.
