PEOPLE across the country experienced cold conditions after temperatures dropped to below 10°C in some areas, including Kokstad.
Many residents flocked to the Southern Drakensberg Mountains to enjoy the newly fallen snow, which covered the mountainous areas.
When Kokstad residents woke up on Sunday morning, Mount Currie Mountain and Nolangeni were covered with snow, which lasted a day.
While driving around Kokstad, Fever reporter Siphelele Nketo noted many people who had stopped their vehicles along the N2 to take pictures, while others were playing in the snow.
According to the supervisor of Kokstad Firefighters Thomekile Ngodwana, no traffic interruptions were experienced in Kokstad.
Ngodwana noted that the recent snow did not last any longer than previous years’ occurrences.
In Matatiele, snow covered the mountains next to the border areas of Lesotho, while bed and breakfasts and hotels in Underberg were packed by people wanting to see and experience snow, some for the first time.
Andile Zwezwe, who is the municipal tourism manager for Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma municipality, said Underberg welcomed people who came all the way from Durban, Port Shepstone and other areas from last Friday evening until Monday morning.
“Many people spent the weekend in Underberg, viewing snow in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains,” he said.
Zwezwe said that when there is snow they often welcome lots of visitors, this in contrast to dry seasons when they receive few visitors.
