THE Manqoba Mngqithi Foundation has taken another step towards developing sport in the Harry Gwala District by extending their support to include boxing.
The foundation, which previously only focused on football, was founded by Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi to develop sport in his home town of Umzimkhulu and the Harry Gwala District.
The foundation’s secretary, Mveli Hloba said many young boxers in the district need coaching and support.
“On August 4, the foundation introduced boxing games for the first time in the district for the benefit of young boxers. We have partnered with many sponsors who are willing to support boxing,” he said.
As part of promoting boxing in the Ugu, Alfred Nzo and Harry Gwala districts, a boxing tournament will be held in Durban under the theme “fighting for water” on October 20.
“The winner will be awarded a big water reservoir for his or her community boxers from local municipalities will be given boxing equipment including punching bags,” said Hloba.
For the preparation of the tournament, six boxers from each district municipality will be selected. In Harry Gwala District, selections will be done next month.
In 2017, the foundation handed over prizes, including soccer kits, to Harry Gwala District football teams as a way of supporting sport.
