GREEN Network is planning to transform illegal dumping areas in Caluza, Thembalihle, Ashdown, France and the Hanley Dam area into public parks suitable for the family.

Green Network’s Nkanyiso Khumalo said they have just finished clearing illegal dump sites in Caluza and Thembalihle - the next stop will be Ashdown, France and the Henley Dam area.

“We met with the communities and had an in-depth discussion on what our intensions are and how these illegal dumping sites can be transformed.

“We installed ‘do not litter’ boards and our volunteers from the communities will ensure the areas stay litter-free. As an environmental organisation our duty is to see illegal dumping being addressed and inform people about the benefits of caring for the environment.

“It is our duty to see to it that illegal dumping is put to rest. We hope that people will value the work we have done for their area,” said Khumalo.

Stakeholders behind the project include Green Network, Dusi uMngeni Conservation Trust (Duct), Msunduzi Municipality and National Lottery.

“While engaging with the communities we discovered that in Caluza residents illegally dump garbage because there is no waste collection in the area.

“In Henley Dam there are people who dump garbage bags near people’s houses and then drive off. We want to turn these illegal dumping areas into public parks for recreational activities where children can play in one safe area and not in the street,” said Khumalo.
