Action taken against illicit fake food trade
Government has resolved that all regulatory bodies in South Africa be involved in joint operations to curb on illicit fake food products.
The decision was taken during an interdepartmental meeting held on Friday, 31 August, in Pretoria.
The focus will be on law enforcement and education about the effects of the trade in illicit fake food products.
In a statement issued, government stated there was a gap in the awareness of consumers with relation to information related to the safety of food products. There is grave concern about the spreading of fake news on illicit fake food products with the serious potential to create public panic and fuel emotions.
Complaints on illicit fake food products can be directed to the National Consumer Commission (012-428-7000), the Department of Health (011-386-2003/6) and Business Against Crime (32211).
These numbers are operational from Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 15:00.
