Donation to nurture social skills, manners

The Hayes Primary School in the Hantam Region has received a donation of outdoor table benches, which were made locally by the De Aar-based family business Dumas Ingenieurswerke.

The learners of this small community school, which accommodates Gr. R to Gr. 7, were in need of a place where they could enjoy their school lunch.

“With these new table benches, we hope to not only provide seating, but to promote social skills and create a time for learners to sit and eat together,” explained Hlengiwe Radebe, economic development director for De Aar Solar Power.

The grateful principal of the school, Yolande de Klerk, said the extra strong table benches would be centrepieces in the learners’ everyday activities for many years to come.

“This is more than helping us achieve our goal of making a difference in the lives of the children. We will be using these to help teach them table manners and good eating habits,” said De Klerk.

According to a statement by De Aar Solar Power, the company has assisted the school in the past by supplying equipment and stationery for creative skills and art development in 2017.

“It was during that visit to the school that we identified the need for tables benches, for the children to be able to sit and eat their lunch,” revealed Radebe.

The company elaborated that buddy benches were becoming commonplace in school yards across the country.

“The buddy bench is established as a place for learners and students to show that they are seeking new friendships and interaction, with the backup of solid education.

“It has proven to be an integral part of schoolyard social interaction.”
