Matriculants from all over the country who excel in academics and are involved in culture, sport and leadership at their schools, can now enter for the annual Matriculant of the Year competition.

Community service and the learner’s involvement in their community will also be taken in consideration during the evaluation process.

This elite competition has been presented by the University of the Free State (UFS) and Volksblad since 1981.

Entrants must have the intention to study full-time at the UFS from 2020. All achievers may enter themselves into the competition or can be entered by their school. The principal’s signature and the school stamp must be on the form.

Each entry will be evaluated according to specific criteria, after which 25 semifinalists will be announced.

Of these the 14 finalists will be invited to the Matriculant of the Year weekend, during which they will be evaluated. It will take place from 08:00 on Friday, 27 September, to Sunday morning, 29 September.

The winner will receive prize money of several thousand rand from the sponsors, Absa, the Kovsie Alumni Trust, Mazars, Pick n Pay Hypermarket and Pick n Pay Preller Walk, a bursary to the value of R12 000 from UFS Student Recruitment and gifts valued at R8 000. The other 13 finalists will each get prize money from Absa, the Kovsie Alumni Trust, Mazars, Pick n Pay Hypermarket, Pick n Pay Preller Walk, a bursary of R7 500 from UFS Recruitment and gifts valued at R8 000.

Two special prizes worth R5 000 each, sponsored by the Kovsie Alumni Trust, will be awarded to the best achiever in sport and the best achiever in culture.

Each of the 11 other semifinalists will receive R3 000 in prize money from the Kovsie Alumi Trust.

Entries must reach the UFS before or on Friday, 2 August.
