A Hertzogville couple that was robbed, and the woman raped by two assailants during the ordeal, has received some justice.
This is after the Hertzogville Regional Court sentenced one assailant, Tumelo John Geco (25), to long term imprisonment.
Geco was convicted and sentenced on 13 August.
He was found guilty as charged for robbing the couple and for raping the woman in the presence of her husband who was tied up.
The court slapped Geco with a life sentence plus 15 years imprisonment.
Capt. Stephen Thakeng, provincial police spokesperson, said the search was on for the second suspect who is still at large.
He said Geco and his accomplice attacked the couple on 19 May at mid-night, robbing their belongings, including their vehicle.
Other items robbed include clothing, two cellphones and two laptops.
After committing the horrendous crime, Thakeng said Geco and his wanted accomplice drove off with the vehicle belonging to the woman.
“The wife managed to untie her husband and sought help from the police in Hertzogville,” he said.
Thakeng said all items and the vehicle were positively identified by the couple after the arrest of Geco in Boshoff.
He said investigation further revealed that the two attackers took turns raping the woman in the presence of the husband who was tied up and kept in the house.
“The husband was overpowered and tied up with electrical cords on both hands and feet.
“The two accomplices gained entrance into their house by breaking open the kitchen window.
“The couple, who was asleep in the bedroom, was awaken by the two persons in the bedroom,” said Thakeng.
He said the successful prosecution and conviction of Geco followed intensive investigation by Det. Const. Teko Shomolekae and Det. Const. Mojalefa Mkhehlane of the Family Violence, Sexual Crimes and Child Protection Unit from Bultfontein.
