Karatekas to represent country

Attending the world cup selection tournament in Cape Town was a trip worth taking for the Galeshewe-based Kyokushin karate club.

The team participated in the tournament on 18 August.

The members of the club returned with good news, as ten of the 22 of them were selected to represent the province and the country in the world cup championship in India in October 2019.

For Lawrence Booi, the team coach, it came as a surprise, as it is the first time that such young participants have qualified.

Booi said the members of his team now had to work harder on their fitness and stamina tactics and that he was positive they were technically prepared.

He said it was the second time that his teams had made it to the world cup, as four of them qualified in 2014.

Booi admitted that improvement was needed in terms of including more girls in the junior team.

“We need to look at getting more girls, as there are only three in the current selection,” he said.
