Learners experience magic of science

Learners of schools in Pampierstad had the opportunity to be marvelled by the world of science.

This happened during National Science Week which took place from Monday, 30 July, to Saturday, 4 August.

The event is an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology and is managed and implemented by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (Saasta).

National Science Week is celebrated countrywide and this year the theme was “deepening our democracy through science”.

Staff members of the ArcelorMittal Science Centre from Sebokeng, accompanied by officials of the Northern Cape Department of Education, hosted activities for learners at the ER Mocwaledi Intermediate School on Tuesday, 2 August.

The Gr. 7s and Gr. 8s were informed about the use of computers and how to programme robots.

After that, a science show took place.

In this show, learners were shown the magic of science through experiments using everyday kitchen-tools.

At the Kgomotso High School, Gr. 10 to Gr. 12 learners were inspired with a motivational speech.

The Gr. 12s were also shown a practical example on the internal resistance of a battery and a chemical experiment to assist them in their upcoming exams.

Boinkgotlo Moremi, a Gr. 12 learner of the Kgomotso High School, said this was his first time to experience a National Science Week activity.

He said he appreciated the motivational talk as it was both very informative and funny.

Boinkgotlo found the demonstration of the internal resistance of a battery enlightening as it is work that will be done this term.

Other science activities were hosted for targeted school audiences in Kimberley, Warrenton, Kuruman, Sutherland and Hartswater by various science organisations.
