The University of the Free State’s (UFS) Department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology donated microscopes to the Luckhoff Combined School to improve the quality of education in the hopes of improving the quality of education for the 60 learners in the school’s Life Sciences class at the school found in the tiny town located west of Bloemfontein.
The donation of 11 instruments will contribute to better quality education .
“This donation puts scientific instruments in the hands of children at an early age, opening their eyes to the possibility of careers in science,” said Prof. Koos Albertyn, programme director of the UFS’ Department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology.
“Exposing learners to science at an early age can spark enthusiasm and a love for learning that might otherwise never appear.”
The donation came as a result of a dedicated teacher’s persistence. In the hopes of inspiring learners, Anzell Spelding built a new science laboratory at the school.
Needing equipment for this life-changing project, she contacted the UFS’ Department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology’ Department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology to enquire about the availability of microscopes.
As the department recently acquired a new set of microscopes for undergraduate teaching in the field of Microbiology, ten fully functional microscopes, along with two others that can be used for spare parts, were donated to motivate the learners to choose science as a career.
“These microscopes will enable learners to look at specimens at a microscopic level, thereby accessing the wonders of natural science at the tiniest and most fascinating level,” Albertyn said.
