Museums in the spotlight

The importance of museums as not only a source of history and information, but also of human advancement, was highlighted on International Museum Day on Saturday (18/05).

Museums store a wealth of historic elements from nature to man-made features.

The significance of museums was celebrated under the theme “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition.”

Parallel to a series of events highlighting the significance of museums in human life, tThe National Museum in Bloemfontein held a free exhibition to enable members of the public to view how nature has evolved over the years.

According to Ancilia van Staden, head of the education department at the National Museum, the exhibition attracted approximately 564 people.

Similar educational events are held all around the world with the chief objective of encouraging more members of the public to visit museums.

The public also enlightened about the origins of museums and their importance in human development among other aspects.

The Oliewenhuis Art Museum also held a special guided tour on Saturday.

Karen Marais, senior exhibition officer of this museum, said the tour was aimed at highlighting the donation of artworks and its role in the museum.
