The annual Mothusi Dikwelana Tournament has proved to be a key tourist attraction due to its consistent growth.
Hosted in the Ntswanahatshe Village on Saturday, 1 September, this year’s tournament was a more vibrant event than ever with locals and visitors rallying behind it.
The Ntswanahatshe Village is based 170 km outside Kimberley on the border of the Northern Cape and North West., into the Northwest province
The theme of the tournament was “Dlala Diski o latlhe Beer le Zolo”.
This tournament won the Golden Horn Award for the best volunteer of the province insports development in the province at the North West Sports Awards Ceremony that was held on Friday, 24 August.
Mothusi Dikwelanna, the organiser and founder of the tournament, was nominated for the award by the public.
He says the award belongs to the community and the Mothusi Dikwelana Sports Tournament team that helps him to organise and sponsor the event.
Soccer kits, trophies, medals and balls are sponsored every year.
He feels the award deserves to continue to be compensated by hard work.
Dikwelana got the honour to lift the golden award during the auspicious ceremony at Taung’s M.M Sebitloane Special School a week prior to the main event, the tournament.
Dikwelana rates the award, which was presented to him on the eve of his birthday, as his best birthday present ever.
“This was the highlight of the journey towards the tournament’s success.
“I did not expect this at all. , especially not after I was informed at short notice about it, including the invitation to attend,” said Dikwelana in disbelieve.“It just goes to show you that there will always be someone recognising your hard work.”
“I saw the need for such an initiative that is why I started it in 2012.
He believes that, if more sponsors buy into the idea of the event, he will reach his goal – to help “With more sponsors buying into it and the existing ones we will reach our dreams, which is to those in need of finances to finish school and their tertiary education.
According to Elaborating on the objective of his concept,Mothusi Dikwelanna, the organiser and founder of the tournament, the event was started in 2012 to curb the abuse of drugs and alcohol among the youth through the promotion of sports.
Altogether eight soccer clubs, ten netball clubs, four women’s soccer clubs and four masters soccer clubs participated in this year’s event.
In only six years, the tournament has grown fromonDikwelana reveals that the tournament was in its 6th year after it started off with onl four men’s teams participating in 2012.
“With more community involvement, it has grown from strength to strength over the years – to such an extent that teams from as far as the Ga-Khunwana Village participated this year.”
The winners were awarded with trophies and medals on the same evening.
The annual tournament is usually held in the last week of August or the first week of September.
“The aim is to assist less-fortunate learners by donating sanitary products, school shoes and school uniforms to local schools.
“This event is not about making a profit, but empowering our youth and keeping them focused on a bright future, which is education,” Elaborating on the objective of his concept,Dikwelana said.
“As we are based in a disadvantaged community, our biggest challenge still remains sponsorships, but we will get there in time.”
He plans to start touring the province, engaging youth through various sporting programmes such as coaching clinics, and educational programmes where he will motivate them to take education seriously.
“They should know that education is important. Without it, you are nothing,” he said.
“The tour of the Mothusi Dikwelana Sports Tournament will show learners that good things will come their way if they take the time to commit to something and allow themselves to grow. in sports if you take time you will grow and good things will come your way. Then, in turn, they can encourage others to do the same.”
Sharing his motto in life he said: Be like a stamp, stick to one place until you reach your destination. A stamp can stay on an envelope, moving from one place to the other but it will settle and relax until it reaches the hands of whoever it is addressed to.”
This year’s winning clubs are the African Stars FC from the Choseng Village, the Ga-Khunwana Masters Netball Club from the Khunwana Village, the Taung United women’s soccer club and the scooped the ladies soccer award while Pudimoe-based Matlhako masters clubscooped the Master trophy.
