The municipal manager of the Nala Local Municipality, Christopher Mokomela (53), and Tefo Montsitsi (51), director of the security company Zero Tolerance, are at odds with the law.
They were arrested for allegedly defrauding the municipality of R206 000 through a security deal.
The pair faces charges of frauding the municipality and the contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
The ANC-led municipality administers Bothaville and Wesselsbron.
On their appearance in the Bothaville Magistrate’s Court on Monday (02/12), Montsitsi and Mokomela were each released on R5 000 bail with conditions.
They are set to reappear on 5 February.
Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said the case is postponed for further investigation.
According to Shuping, the bail conditions stipulate that they are not allowed to communicate – whether directly or indirectly – with state witnesses regarding the case.
The suspects also had to hand over their passports to the investigating officer.
Shuping said preliminary findings show that Montsitsi and Mokomela allegedly defrauded the ANC-led municipality in the Free State with a fraudulent deal.
He said findings reveal thatMontsitsi allegedly submitted invoices to the municipality for services that were not rendered.
Despite this, Mokomela, as the municipal manager, allegedly approved the invoices and Montsitsi’s security company was paid.
