Vehicle owners urged to be vigilant

Due to escalating theft from vehicles, the police in Bloemfontein strongly warned vehicle owners to never leave valuables in their vehicles.

Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial spokesperson, said several cases relating to the crime of theft from vehicles have been reported in Bloemfontein, highlighting the negligence of vehicle owners.

He has encouraged vehicle owners to guard against increasing crime of theft from motor vehicles.

“According to an analysis, most of the incidents are due to the negligence and sheer carelessness of some vehicle owners,” Makhele said.

It has also been noted that an absence of vigilance exists of criminal elements that lie in wait.Motorists are urged to be more vigilant of their surroundings, whether on their own property or in public places. They should always be alert when handling valuable items such as laptops, cameras, cellphones, handbags and wallets.”

The crime is so rampant, the Free State provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Moeketsi Sempe, has also express grave concern and urged motorists to remain alert.

According to Makhele, theft from motor vehicles is regarded as an opportunistic crime.

“To avoid this, motorists are advised to take safety precautions and adhere to them at all times.”
