THE A1 Cyanosis Midlands Adventure Race has come and gone and what a whirlwind weekend it was.
Teams came from all over the country to take on the 162 km of tough racing.
Six out of 12 teams entered completed the full course and, at 4:27 am on Sunday morning, we welcomed home team Jabberwock Adventure Racing in a total racing time of 22 hours 27 minutes, local PMB team Muscle Memory were second and Team Red Ants of Johannesburg were third.
An extended thanks must go to all who were involved in making this weekend a success; from land owners to the SAPS and municipal managers who popped in to show their support throughout the weekend, thank you!
The course saw the athletes swim across a cold Lake Merthley, ride and run through the very dry Mhlopeni and Mooi River Valley, paddle around a very windy Craigieburn Dam (some teams experiencing 2 m swells at night) kloofing out of L’abri Adventure Centre, navigating their way around and over the beautiful Blinkwater Trails and finally racing home on bicycles through the Umvoti vlei to finish at The Beehive.
Ivala Lodge hosted the transition from foot to bike and a few teams commented on snacking on a pecan nut or two before heading out.
Now the focus is on the Firebreak Fun 5 Series, which saw the first series last week being a great success as 62 runners entered and thoroughly enjoyed the new course set out by Andrew Mason.
The event will host four more runs, with a new 2.5km run being included for those who want to walk or run a shorter distance and still enjoy a glass of Gluhwein and soup.
Join us every Monday for a 6 pm start at Holme Lacy Trail Clubhouse for a fun filled 5 km or 2.5 km night trail run!
