All go for youth empowerment

MORE than 100 young people from Umvoti were addressed last Thursday by the president of the National African Federation for the Building Industry, Aubrey Tshalata, who inducted them into two skills development programmes.

At the youth programme launch in June, young people were encouraged to apply for the programmes.

Almost a thousand applications were received, but Tshalata said: “The stringent process which we undertook while selecting the beneficiaries left us with those that we found most suitable for the programmes.”

The programmes, which are divided into two, will have a group of 45 students undergo a skills development programme over three months while the remaining 75 will partake in a learnership programme over 12 months.

“We are glad that our young people will be employable after these programmes have ended. What gives us more joy is that they will in fact be either entrepreneurs or in the employ of large national construction companies,” remarked the Umvoti mayor, Thamsanqa Ngubane, who was also in attendance.

The students will undertake both practical and theoretical work with practicals expected to be on municipal construction sites.
