THE annual Golf 911 bass fishing competition is being held on Saturday, November 17 at the Jondol Dam in Greytown. Registration is at 5 am with lines in at 5.30 am. The entrance fee is R120 for seniors and R70 for ages 12 years and under.
The first prize is R4 000 for the longest bass and, to add to the excitement, there will be a swindle entry (for R30 extra) — this entry was very popular last year.
There will be other prizes up for grabs too.
Food will be on sale by Arcadia, the Greytown Conservancy, and the Catholic Church and there will be a cash bar.
This year there will also be a trail run/walk at this event. There are two distances — five kilometres and 10 km. Registration is at 7.30 am and the races start at 8 am. The cost will be R40 or R60 per person (depending on the distance).
All proceeds to go to G911.
The Golf 911 Centre was established in 1998 by the farming community as a result of violent attacks on the Umvoti community members.
The Umvoti G911 centre is an apolitical, non-profit, voluntary organisation based in Greytown serving the community of Umvoti as a whole.
The main function is a liaison between SAPS, Road Traffic Inspectorate, Fire Department (including Firehawk for fire detection amongst the farming community), ambulance services, Eskom, Telkom, the municipality, local farmer’s associations, businesses and the private security firms.
Members of the public and the farming community need only phone or radio the centre with an emergency or problem and the necessary will be done.
The call centre is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The centre relies entirely on the community for its funding, with townsfolk, businesses and farmers subscribing at a nominal monthly fee.
The fundraiser is organised each year by the Umvoti Agricultural Society to raise funds for his valuable organisation that our community has at their beck and call for when assistance and information is required.
The plan for the use of the funds is to install a Licence Plate Recognition System in the Greytown area.
This is an integrated security surveillance system that incorporates military grade applications.
Golf 911 management would like to install such a system on all major roads entering and exiting our district.
It is felt that this system will benefit the entire community by detecting through licence plates undesirable vehicles entering or leaving the Umvoti district.
This project has involved quite a bit of work and administration from various departments, however G911 management are hopeful that this will be happening soon.
