Operation Light Up in Umvoti

Umvoti Ward 3 and Ward 15 residents several months ago raised their concerns with Umvoti Municipality about the high crime rate specially at night. As one of the crime curbing measures, the Mayor, Cllr TC Ngubane,last week officially introduced the contractors who will be responsible for the installation of over 40 high mast light structures in both communities.

The Mayor, said the safety of the community was at the forefront of his priorities and that these structures aim to deter would be criminals.

Community members were even more pleased when , the Mayor also announced that the installation of these structures would bring employment opportunities for the community, “this project is like a three-legged pot; one leg is the municipality, the other is the contractor while the third and most important leg is the community.

The construction, which will begin in September, is expected to be completed in 6 months and will provide jobs for 44 general workers, 4 security guards and 2 community liaison officers as well as a community committee which isexpected to assist in development and maintaining a healthy relationship between the contractors and community members.
