St Cathryn’s news

ONE of the biggest Farmers Agri-care Monthly Mugs of 2019 saw 21 players competing for the prize money and eggs for the November mug, with a golf touring group called the “Doris P tour”, as well as a group of Greytown members, and then our own members travelling from as far as Kloof, Pietermaritzburg and Maphumulo.

The afternoon storm did not threaten the field but saw our very own Dieter with a gross 79, and a visiting golfer from Greytown Golf Club playing off a four handicap, Gareth Larkan with a gross 76, get into the clubhouse before the storm. Maybe the most important number recorded was the 14 mm of rain that fell in the afternoon, for which we are most grateful.

The golf report-back meeting and members’ dinner will be held on December 21, and the second most important trophy will be up for grabs on December 22, when the Mug of Mug will be played. All Captain’s Putter winners of the year will also have a trophy and prizes.

The annual Kranskop Farmers Association nine-hole fun golf day played on November 11 drew 34 players and fun and laughter were the order of the day.

A few stallholders sold their goodies and a team of runners even took part in the seven-kilometre fun forestry run.

Severe heat on Saturday hampered many entrants as the temperature turned near 33,5 degrees C and the organisers wanted to delay the start but the runners kept to the 4 pm start. Bertus Herholdt came in first in the fun run. Well done to all who walked and ran in that heat.

The FNB golfers proved to be too much of a professional golfing unit when they scooped the first and third positions.

The fun format “American scramble” over nine holes caused much laughter as some of the golfers made this their only outing onto a golf course in the year. The cricketers in the field displayed some of their “cover drive cricket shots” and some hidden talent was discovered. And some of the farmers, well what is there to say, “agricultural shots” were the order of the day and cannot be found in the Gary Players golf coaching manual.

1st Team FNB: Gorden Hutcheson, Reece Tifflin and Haymish Jackson nett 27

Defending champions Team Stihl slumped to second to last position. Team captain Bodo Ortman had to contend with the pensioners in his team.

Match Kassier and Kevin Williams wilted in the heat of the day.

Next time, no German sandals and socks will be allowed.
