A LIFE without dance is unimaginable for Caleb Bruiners (16) - a learner at Global Leadership Academy in Jeffreys Bay.
As soon as he started drama clas-ses in primary school, Caleb knew he wanted to spend his life on the stage.
Soon he was taking part in music, poetry, drama and art competitions - raking in the awards.
However, it was only years later, in high school, that he started to dance competitively - starting a dance group with four friends, called New Legacy.
Now, Caleb’s hard work is paying off with a talent scout offering him a place in a Los Angeles performing arts showcase - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase his talent on an international stage.
It is an opportunity Caleb has hoped for, but never expected to be offered after he performed at the International ARTS Talent Showcase (IATS), an annual talent showcase, in Johannesburg earlier this year.
But before he can tread the boards of the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS) in Orlando, Florida, where he has been invited to a dancing, acting, modelling audition from June 30 to July 10 this year, he has to raise funds to get there.
He and other aspiring singers, dancers, actors and models from across the world will be exposed to international agents, record labels, film casting directors, coaches and managers from New York, Los Angeles and Europe.
In a bid to raise the necessary funds, the family started to rent out rooms in their house.
“We have furthermore cut back on all expenses, including going out,” says Caleb who has his eye set on taking part in SA Got Talent in May this year.
“It is a huge sacrifice, but definitely all worth it.”
In preparation for the auditions, Caleb practices twice a day between two to three hours - including weekends.
Once he has become a successful actor and dancer, it is his dream to open a professional dance studio in Jeffreys Bay.
“There are a lot of talented residents in Jeffreys Bay. We cannot let that go to waste,” he says.
