Jo’burg NPO blesses Hankey with water

A total of 25 000 litres of water was delivered to the drought-stricken town of Hankey on Tuesday.

The water was a donation from Ashraful Uloom, a non-profit organisation from Johannesburg dedicated to serving those in need.

Suhail Wadee, of Ashraful Uloom, said they had learnt of Hankey’s plight through the national media.

“We were also involved in collecting water for Cape Town when they faced serious water shortages; hence, we wanted to reach out to Hankey as well,” he said.

Wadee and his colleagues travelled to Hankey to assist with the distribution, which took place from an open space at Stofwolk.

Hankey resident Godfrey Tobie said the community was overwhelmed by the kindness shown by Ashraful Uloom.

“It is heart-warming to know that people from afar care so much about our plight here. May the givers be blessed in the same way they have blessed us,” he said.

While the level of the Kouga Dam has jumped to almost 40% after the weekend’s heavy rain, it seems likely that water rationing will conti-nue at the towns of Hankey and Patensie.

“The municipality would like to stop water rationing and restore the supply to the towns, but early indications are that the Department of Water and Sanitation do not yet want to lift the restrictions they have placed on extraction from the dams.

“We will continue engaging with them and other roleplayers in this regard.”
