Joint operation to keep communities safe

KOUGA Municipality and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are working together to keep communities safe.

Illegal electricity wires, worth an estimated R12 000, were confiscated at Jeffreys Bay last week in two joint operations by Kouga law enforcement officers and SAPS.

Six foreign nationals, suspected of being in South Africa illegally, were also arrested while fines of more than R10 000 were issued for offences ranging from electricity theft to environmental health transgressions.

Kouga Mayor Horatio Hendricks said the safety and security of communities was of paramount importance to the municipality.

“Law-abiding residents have been pleading with us to act against illegal electricity users. Not only does illegal connections increase the risk of power outages, but it also threatens lives and property.

“Communities are aware of these risks and growing increasingly impatient with perpetrators,” he said.

He said that in addition to illegal electricity, the operations aimed at ensuring that businesses were properly licensed and compliant with environmental health regulations.

“The municipality’s Law Enforcement Unit, in conjunction with our Environmental Health officers, recently inspected shops across the region so as to ensure that the businesses were legal and the products on their shelves were safe for human consumption.

“Should residents ever be concerned about the products that are being sold at a shop, we ask that they report it to our call centre or through the Link app, so that the municipality can investigate.”
