Players played five rounds of the two sections, juniors section and adult section.

The first position for the juniors section was won by Serina Naidoo from Northdale and the first position for the seniors section was won by Nolwande from Durban.

Umgungundlovu Chess Association will also host the Umgungundlovu Spring Chess Open at Maritzburg College on September 1.

The tournament is open to every one.

A donation fee of R50 will be required for players who want to play in section A and a R100 donation for section B.

Umgungundlovu District chess chairperson Lindo Ngubane said of the upcoming event: “We are calling for any organisation or departments or businesses or individuals to help us with donations to buy food for players on the day.

“We also seek support for us to buy a laptop and a projector for us to be able to teach chess and help the affiliated clubs to grow as we are planning to have a league in 2019 that is going to be played during the schools holidays,” he said.

He also encouraged Pietermaritzburg citizens to open their own chess clubs.
