CONDOLENCES continue to pour in for the late chief traffic officer for Umvoti Municipality, Thobani Ndaba (44), who was shot dead at the Greytown municipal offices last Thursday afternoon, November 1.
The Gazette learnt that Ndaba was leaving an official municipal meeting when unknown men shot him.
Ndaba joined Umvoti Municipality on April 1, 2011 as a traffic officer examining driver’s license and motor vehicles.
He worked his way up to manager for public safety in 2015.
Ndaba was the acting director of community services in the Umvoti Municipality.
Loved and respected by many in the community, Ndaba was a former pupil at Siqongweni High in Edendale.
Police minister Bheki Cele visited the Ndaba family in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.
Cele was quoted in the media as saying Ndaba was killed “execution style and his killers used automatic rifles to kill him”.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “A case of murder was opened at Greytown police station for investigation. He was fatally shot by unknown suspects.”
Spokesperson for Umvoti Municipality Phindile Phungula said in a statement: “His absence will be greatly felt by all he crossed paths with. “We pass our deepest condolences, especially to his wife and their two young children, as well as his family at large. “As an institution and the public at large, we have lost a dedicated public servant.” KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube said she believes that this murder is an attack on the rule of law in the country as criminal elements continue to destabilise the institution of local government which is meant to serve the people. “We urge communities to come forward with information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of this heinous crime. “As the institution of local government, we have lost yet another dedicated public servant whose wealth of experience and knowledge benefited our people. “We call upon the law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in their search for the criminals responsible for this murder,” said Dube-Ncube.
