Defeated but not deterred

THE Hollywoodbets Dolphins went down to the WSB Cape Cobras by eight wickets in their shortened Momentum One Day Cup clash in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, this despite a first hundred of the campaign for Sarel Erwee.

With 28 overs to bat, the Dolphins had a brilliant 116 from 82 balls with Sarel Erwee to thank as they ended on 218 for six in their innings.

Erwee’s hundred included 13 fours and four sixes. He was supported by a 38 from Vaughn van Jaarsveld while captain Khaya Zondo got 29 off 26 balls. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, Janneman Malan was in fine form and scored a match-winning hundred as he and captain JP Duminy took their side home with two overs to spare.

Malan scored 115 not out off 83 balls while Duminy ended 74 not out off 56 balls. Their partnership for the third wicket was worth 162 runs.

The wicket takers for the Dolphins were Calvin Savage and Kerwin Mungroo, who picked up the wickets of George Linde and Pieter Malan respectively.

Speaking after the game, coach Grant Morgan said he believes that the seam bowling is an area that needs to be improved on going forward.

“Our spin attack is our strength but we just need to button up our seam attack by hitting better areas and making them hit us off our areas instead of giving away soft boundaries,” Morgan said.

“We need to just keep muscling down and trying to get it right.”

Erwee has been on the outside of the starting XI for the opening part of the competition and returned to form last week with a fifty, but Morgan is happy that the left-hander managed to get a significant score on Saturday.

“Sarel was playing consistently during the four-day campaign and he had a few things he needed to sort out in his head.

“He played a great knock last week and was superb on Saturday in front of his family on his home ground,” Morgan added.

The Dolphins take on the Multiply Titans in their next Momentum One Day Cup match on March 15 in Durban.
