A NORTHDALE man was seriously injured on Sunday morning when his bakkie hit a pothole on Olympia Way, causing him to crash into a street lamp.
ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell said the 23-year-old man crashed into the pole after veering off the road and had to undergo advanced life support interventions while he was rushed to Pietermaritzburg Mediclinic.
Paramedics said Olympia Way has many potholes. In another incident on Sunday morning, a woman (49) was seriously injured after she either jumped or was thrown from a moving taxi along St Patrick’s Road in Scottsville.
ER24’s Campbell said it is not clear how the incident occurred, but that the matter is being investigated both by police and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI). The woman was treated at the roadside before she was taken to Northdale Hospital.
On Sunday morning, a truck pulling bowsers slid across on the N3, closing the northbound lanes for a few hours. The incident occurred just after the Tweedie/ Howick off-ramp.
Traffic was diverted and no injuries were reported. In another incident on the N3 on Saturday a truck driver was seriously injured and his 30-year-old female passenger was killed when the truck they were travelling in overturned while descending the Town Hill section of the N3.
The woman was declared dead at the scene and the man was rushed to hospital.
On Friday evening a 44-year-old man was seriously injured when his motorbike collided head-on with a light motor vehicle on Town Bush Road. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
