THE much awaited and popular Ward 34 Annual Community Awards may be experiencing some challenges, but it will definitely take place, this according to community activist, event founder, and local veteran journalist Jerry Barnes.
The hardworking local organising committee (Loc) has met a couple of times to plan the event but are facing a few challenges, however Barnes is confident they will overcome them.
“As a founder of this event, I am not going to overlook a couple of issues that we are facing.
“Maybe I should blame myself, not my Loc members, for failing to secure potential sponsors and partners to make it happen.
“Believe me, it’s a totally different ball game out there and is very difficult.
“Currently, and it’s just very hard to believe it. the Ward 34 Loc are trying hard to put together this important awards event to honour their community members who are contributing positively and doing good work around the area, but there is not even one businessmen prepared to come on board to support the event.
“The fact is, as Loc members, we are also just normal community members trying to do some good work by bringing our residents together and salute them for uplifting or putting Ward 34 on the map.
“We don’t have a budget or receive funds from anybody, but totally depend on donations.
“Nevertheless, despite the difficulties that we are currently facing, our Loc members and our chairman, Councillor Mike Amod, are all strong in faith and we will pull it off. I guess it’s just about staying strong in prayer, focused, positive and united,”said Barnes.
Barnes says at first the event was scheduled for September 14, but it has now has been postponed to September 28, when it will be held at the Eastwood Civic Centre, in order to “tie up loose ends”.
“As I said from day one, this is a community event to honour community members.
“As Loc members, we are all working hard and promising our people around Ward 34 (Eastwood, Cinderella Park, Panorama and Madiba) that the our Ward 34 Annual Community Awards will eventually take place because all guys behind it are not failures and are passionate,”said Barnes.
The public, business sectors, potential partners and sponsors are urged to donate old medals, trophies, miniatures, snacks and meals to go towards the event. Also local traditional, musical groups, artists, indlamu and imbongi interested to be part of the event are welcome.
