Oliver Smith, Enviro Club President in Grade 11, and educator Sean Anthony, Enviro Club convenor, were selected from schools in Pietermaritzburg to attend the IFA Lethu Project, a five-day high impact environmental awareness camp from August 9 – 13 at Umfolozi Game Reserve, sponsored by the Johnny Lowe Memorial Trust.
Oliver says “The camp was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.
My most impactful moment was during the plane ride, I saw the immense difference between the beautiful ocean and the muddy St Lucia lake, separated by a mere dune.”
“My goal is to pass the baton of conservation awareness to 1000 people. The camp taught me many values, one being, ‘It’s not just saving one rhino or species, it’s about saving the habitat that species live in,” says Oliver.
Sean Anthony claims that it was very inspiring to see young people so passionate and actively involved in conserving their environment.
