UMGUNGUNDLOVU District held their annual economic management sciences (EMS) quiz on Thursday at the Kharina Secondary School in Dunveria, with various pupils representing their districts coming forward to be number one in the uMgungundlovu District.
Zandi Mathonsi, a subject adviser for EMS at the uMgungundlovu District, said that the purpose of the quiz was to promote healthy academic competition and to promote curriculum coverage in schools. “We focused on pupils from Grades 7 to 9 and based the competition on what the pupils learn in the classroom in their curriculum assessment policy statements [caps],” said Mathonsi. Mathonsi said that they had held various quizzes in the uMgungundlovu and that the top pupils from those districts were competing for the number one spot in order to represent the district at the KwaZulu-Natal version of the competition.
Piloting in 2017, the project has seen an influx in participants this year according to Mathonsi, and they expect to see more contestants next year as the quiz gains more exposure.
“We started this without funding from the Department of Education and we have seen a massive growth from last year and expect it to grow even more next year.
Therefore, we are calling on any corporate company or individual to help us by sponsoring us as the funds for this come directly from us and our sponsors,” said Mathonsi.
