Local salon wins big

SHOWING off Pietermaritzburg’s hair talent, local hair salon Blu Gel walked away with eleven trophies at the annual Employers Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty (EOHCB) KZN regional competition, held at the Hilton Hotel on August 5.

Entering all the hair styling categories, including Afro Ladies Cut and Style and Dreadlock and Braiding, the Blu Gel staff represented Pietermaritzburg and their brand in fine style by winning not only 11 trophies but also claiming first in the overall junior and senior sections.

“Blu Gel is all about teamwork. We gain motivation from these competitions and from doing our best in everything.

“Our staff are always encouraged to do their best,” said hairstylist Odette Horner.

Pretty Zuma, winner of the senior section and Afro Cut and Style section, said that she had been competing in the competition for four years now and each year was an amazing experience.

“Each year I make sure I bring the trophy home.

“The most amazing part about the competition was winning overall three times in a row,” marvelled Zuma.

In her second year of competition, winner of the overall junior section, Shana-Lee van der Byl, said this year has been her most exciting so far.

“I feel this year excited me the most; the atmosphere, the support, the nerves, the work on stage was all inspiring to me,” said van der Byl.

Having opened their doors in 1999, Blu Gel has been offering quality hair service in Pietermaritzburg for the last 19 years.

“Blu Gel is also a training salon. You can do your full apprenticeship and training at Blu Gel and obtain a qualification through Blu Gel,” said Horner.
