A DISLOCATED knee on a key player did not stop Pietermaritzburg’s hockey team from winning the Bronze Final in Benoni 6-4 on Sunday, August 12.
After playing five games and winning three, the girls managed to qualify for the Bronze Finals even though Sharoleen Hemmero had dislocated her knee early in the competition on Friday.
The girls won their opening game on Friday, beating the Vaal 6-2, and then succumbed to two defeats on Saturday, losing 4-2 to Western Province B and 8-1 to Western Province A.
“Even though we lost both our matches on the second day, the girls managed to bounce back and win all their games afterwards. Even with a player down, we still persevered and managed to win the Bronze Final 6-4 by beating Western Province B,” said Ashleigh Abrahams.
She said that even though they had a few hiccups on the day, experiencing transport issues to Benoni, they were extremely proud of themselves as they had never won a final before.
