MNCP helps the homeless

WITH two fires taking place within the space of two weeks at the Jika Joe informal housing settlements recently, efforts made by NPO Mama Ntombi Community Projects (MNCP) have been a happy relief for those who were affected and now find themselves homeless.

“The MNCP Team have been busy with relief efforts.

The immediate need of the fire victims is for food, blankets and clothes after the devastation of losing what little they owned,” stressed pro- ject manager of MNCP, Sandra Pil- lay.

Pillay said it was saddening to note just how many refugees were staying at the informal settlement because of their need to be close to the city centre in order to walk to work due to the lack of transport.

“We are thankful, however, that we are able to step in immediately and provide them with hot beverages, sandwiches and cooked meals and also take them whatever donated items of blankets and clothes we have in our storeroom,” said Pillay.

Ward 33 councillor Nkululeko Mkhize said that the Msunduzi Anti-Land Invasions Unit was not allowing people to rebuild their homes and were not providing any alternative solution either, and therefore people were living in tents.

Pillay said they were touched to know that they had been able to help people.

In the case of Bonginkosi, a man who was in bad health before the MNCP intervened, they were pleased to note that they are making a difference.

“On the day when we arrived he was on the verge of committing
suicide because of his many problems, but now he is in good health and he has even started his own veggie garden after ging without food for a long time,” beamed Pillay.

Those who wish assist or donate to MNCP, so that they can continue in their efforts to help the underprivileged, can contact Pillay on 033 342 6525.
